Visit to Mumbles Coastguard
As part of the process of training the Worms Head Coastwatch, a series of visits have been arranged for all volunteers to visit HM Coastguard at Tutt Head, Mumbles, Swansea. Not so much a formal training session but an opportunity to see the professionals of the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre at work. Steve Mathews is also the liaison officer with the Worms Head Coastwatch.
On this occasion Bernie Kemble gave us a most interesting introduction to their work explaining some of the computerised systems including, communications, AIS (Automatic Identification System), SARS (Search and Rescue System), plotting and incident logging.
It was an excellent insight in to the workings of the MRCC giving the Coastwatch volunteers a better understanding of whom we are trying to play our part with. Fortunately it was a quiet period so we able to have a relaxed visit: many thanks to all concerned.
Update: Mumbles Coastguard has since been closed.
