New NCI Chairman Visits Worm's Head
Having succeeded Alan Richards in the role of Chairman of NCI, Lesley Suddes paid a visit [19th May 2016], accompanied by Alan, to the lookout at Worms Head on Thursday 19 May and met a number of watchkeepers.
In spite of misty conditions the crew were able to point out the risks to those walking out on Worms Head of being cut off by the tide and the steps taken to minimise this. The watchkeepers constantly monitor movement to and from
the island, as well as logging details of vessels within their view. In the event of people or vessels running into danger, the watchkeepers alert ,and provide details to, Her Majesty’s Coastguard and then monitor any rescue operation
mounted by the Coastguard.
After a successful career in the Royal Navy, Lesley joined NCI Nare Point in west Cornwall as a Watchkeeper in 2010, becoming involved in training, fundraising and events organising. In 2013 Lesley was elected to the NCI Board of Trustees where she served as General Secretary.
Following election as Chairman, Lesley said “I am delighted and privileged to take the helm at this stage of the Charity’s development and will do my utmost to ensure that NCI continues to thrive and grow as a successful and highly respected part of the National Search and Rescue Organisation.”
